Hwataoyao Ceramic Kiln

Huataoyao is one of the best ceramic kilns in Nantou which is famous for its great view and food. "Hwataoyao" means flowers, ceramics, and kiln in Chinese. It is found in 1984 by Wen-Hui Chen in the success of his bicycle manufacturing business. Looking for a simple lifestyle back in his childhood, he came back upon a six-hectare of land tucked into Miaoli's mountain. In here, he opened a ceramic kiln, inviting artists to create works to complement his wife's passion for floral arranging. Throughout its more than 20-year history, Chen has personally overseen the addition of every tree, flower, tile and brick. He continues to live on the property and to be involved in the creation and design of its facilities and landscapes, as well as to welcome visitors. But, the day-to-day operations have been turned over to his children who continue the mission to preserve Taiwan's culture, and to find ways to share the story with the world.

Lukang Old District

The Chinese 「一府、二鹿、三艋舺」 means Lukang is the second largest town in Taiwan. The history of the town of Lukang has been characterized by rapid change. In the 17th century, Dutch occupiers used Lukang as a major harbor for exports; in 1784 it was designated as the Taiwan seaport for shipping links with the Hanchiang harbor at Chuanchou on the coast of mainland China. It became the gateway to central Taiwan. At that time the town was crowded with stores that covered their facing streets with awnings, creating the famous 「no sky」market areas. Early in the present century the conservative residents refused to allow the passage of major north and south railways and highways, and the harbor silted up as well, reducing Lukang from the second largest city in Taiwan to a small back water town. It is this conservatism; too. It has allowed the preservation of the traditional face of Lukang.
